Driftwood Theatre Staff
Artistic Director | D. Jeremy Smith
The Driftwood Theatre Group was founded and has been led for 30 years by award-winning Artistic Director D. Jeremy Smith.
Jeremy first guided Driftwood Theatre through decades as a provincially-touring theatre company with the celebrated Bard’s Bus Tour (1995 – 2023). He nurtured the company’s dedication to new play development by introducing the Trafalgar 24 playwriting festival in 2004 and Beyond The Bard playwright development program in 2011. Now based in Picton, Ontario, and with the support of Driftwood’s board of directors and staff, Jeremy has worked to transition the organization towards its current mission, to support the development of new, epic plays by Ontario-based creators.
As a creator steeped in all aspects of play-making – from artistic direction and administration to theatre direction, design, panting and performance, to playwrighting – Jeremy is a passionate believer in the impact of theatre and loves bringing people together to share great stories.

In case you don’t know me, here’s the scoop! I’ve been involved in new play development at Driftwood for the last four years. In 2020, I was part of the company’s final Trafalgar24 event (as the sleepiest dramaturg that ever lived); I’ve run two iterations of the Beyond the Bard Playwrights Unit; and I supported the inaugural Playwrights Around the House Program in 2023. In 2023, I was also the dramaturg on Jeremy and Steven’s Living with Shakespeare…
My time as a dramaturg at Driftwood has always been in service of the company’s commitment to developing new Canadian work, and this will continue (and grow!) in my new role as a Artistic Associate and Company Dramaturg. I am thrilled to be part of Driftwood during this time of transition so that I can contribute to the emergent processes that come of its new mandate.
