The Dream Project: The Project

In our continuing drive to create a distinct voice for classical theatre in Canada, Driftwood is currently engaged in a project to revise and expand upon our original musical adaptation of William Shakespeare’s fantastical comedy, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, first created in 2004.

Prior to 2004 we had twice experimented with a capella music, incorporating it into transitions and songs extant in the plays. The first Dream was an ambitious culmination of our early exploration; creating a full musical production using Shakespeare’s text. We knew we had created something special with considerable potential, but it needed development.

In the interim, creators D. Jeremy Smith, Tom Lillington and Kevin Fox have further deepened their understanding of the musical/a capella structure, while Driftwood Theatre has significantly

improved the technical aspects of its work. Using all of the tools now at our disposal we want to bring our Dream to its full maturity.

A period of revision and workshopping will allow us to revise existing elements while envisioning new possibilities, fully realizing the richness of sound and layers of voices previously unattainable. In short we’re going create a Dream worthy of the Driftwood stage and entirely unique to Canadian theatre.
