Driftwood Theatre announces full cast, creative team and schedule for The Bard’s Bus Tour: Othello

We were too busy raising a glass in memory of the Bard on April 23 (he died on the same day he was born which is always cause for lengthy celebration) to make this announcement but we’re thrilled nonetheless to officially unveil the full cast, creative team and schedule for this summer’s Bard’s Bus Tour, featuring William Shakespeare’s Othello.

Shakespeare’s play of race, jealousy and revenge is an intimate tale set against the grand backdrop of war. Driftwood Theatre has assembled an extraordinary group of talented individuals to bring the story to the stage.

Emerging talents Jordin Hall (Three Sisters, Wolf Manor Theatre; A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Humber River Shakespeare) and Fiona Sauder (Taming of the Shrew, Driftwood; Peter Pan, Bad Hats Theatre) take the roles of ill-fated couple Othello and Desdemona, respectively. Coming between them as the beguiling and ruthless Iago is Driftwood veteran Christopher Darroch (eight Driftwood seasons; Gone With the Wind, MTC).

Balancing out the cast are Shelly Antony (on stage now in Little Pretty and the Exceptional, Factory Theatre) as Cassio, Helen King (three Driftwood seasons; Home & Beauty, Theatre Lac Bromme) as Brabantio/Montano/Bianca, and Ayesha Mansur Gonsalves (Laurier, Theatre New Brunswick; The Winter’s Tale, Dauntless City Theatre) as Emilia/The Duke/Officer.

The production will be helmed by Driftwood Artistic Director D. Jeremy Smith who is joined by Production Designer Nancy Anne Perrin (four seasons Stratford Festival; Of Human Bondage, Magnus Theatre; Hamlet, Hart House Theatre), Movement Director Jennifer Dallas (Taming of the Shrew, Driftwood; Kittly-Bender, Kemi Dance Projects), Lighting Designer Michael Brunet (Dom Juan, Théâtre français de Toronto; Crees in the Caribbean, Magnus Theatre), Sound Designer Tim Lindsay (Bright Lights, Theatre Brouhaha; Red Light Winter, Unit 102), Composer Tom Lillington (15 Driftwood seasons), Fight Director Todd Campbell (3 Driftwood seasons; Cymbeline, Twelfth Night, Camelot, Stratford Festival) and Stage Manager Victoria Wang (Binti’s Journey, Theatre Direct; All’s Well That Ends Well, Hamlet, Canadian Stage).

Unexpected and energetic, Othello will chart a new phase of theatrical exploration as Driftwood Theatre embraces a site-specific aesthetic to incorporate the unique qualities of 25 public spaces – no two performances of Othello will be quite the same.

Driftwood Theatre’s Othello runs July 14 – August 13, 2017, across Ontario. The full touring schedule is now available at driftwoodtheatre.com.

Touring with Othello is The Cyprus Project. Conceived by Driftwood Theatre and produced in partnership with Fixt Point, The Cyprus Project is a special audio installation sharing the personal stories of the 1974 conflict between Greek and Turkish Cypriots, including the Canadian soldiers engaged as part of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force caught in the middle of the conflict.

Driftwood’s Bard’s Bus Tour is made possible with the generous assistance of Ontario Power Generation, TD Bank Group, Toronto Arts Council, Toronto Arts Foundation, Ontario Arts Council, and Service Canada.

The Cyprus Project is presented with the support of Celebrate Ontario and Ontario 150.
